WHich do you use? Did start out with another and switch? what are the pros and cons of your choice now?

I'm looking at bows right now, interested in getting back in after years not shooting at all. Right now i'm thinking recurve over combo.

Hi! I just (like yesterday) started learning. I have the forearm bruises as my initiation I can post later :) I am currently learning on a compound but I also tried a recurve and I loved the natural feel of it.

My arm is double jointed so my elbow turns around causing the inside of my forearm and inner elbow to get in the way so I really have to build up the muscle memory to hold my position properly.

I have found a new obsession (in addition to my bellydancing) :)

I welcome any advice for on line education or video or book recommendations you are willing to share :)

Nice to meet ya!

I have a question for you guys,

one of my bows (my favorite actually) is a mongolian style horse bow. being a more traditional bow, it has no arrow rest.
I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas for gloves ??? it seems that most of the gloves out there have a seam right on the knuckle were the fletching rubs (I've gone through several pairs of gloves this way)

Hi all, just joined, so thought I’d do my intro. I learned to shoot FITA style at the Aquarius archery club in north London waaay back in ’93. I never shot in competition, okay, I did once, but I don’t like to talk about it. What I’m interested in now is more for stress relief/meditation, Kyudo being another style I’m looking into. So for now I’ll be dusting off the old recurve and setting up a target in my yard (really big yard). I look forward to hearing about your bow adventures. Anyone in the Seattle area give me a jingle, or across the world for that matter.

I have an old lemonwood flatbow. It has a very light draw, considerable string follow, and poor cast. I don't want to toss it or hang it on the wall. Can I back it with sinew or glass to reduce the follow and increase the cast?

and no, it's not about sex. I was dreaming that I was trying out (???) for the 2008 Olympics in recurves (not my style) and I was instructed to shoot a laser-motion-detector-enabled toothpick-sized recurve bow & arrow at a human face on a projected screen. For some reason I made all bullseyes (not that making bullseyes are hard for me... it's quite easy, but not when its ALL bulseyes) and they hit on the face in the nasal area. After I was scored, I found out I got a 1450 FITA STAR for recurves (which if anyone knows, there are no such thing as a 1450 STAR FITA in anything, let alone recurves...). I am wondering, since I believe in the power of my dreams, does this mean I will make it to the olympics?

hmmm.............................................hm...

yesterday i had the fortune to attend Dr. Lee's lecture on the BEST archery technique. Biomechanic Efficiency Shooting Technique. of 23 olympic gold medalists 12 have been his. he coached the australian team for athens olympic and they took the gold. he has been brought to the u.s. to coach us (for we are pitifully poor ranking only 7 or 8 without any increase in shooting scores) at the chula vista training center. i have his website below so you can check it out. i've already noticed an improvement in my scores and it really is a completely new way of shooting. for all you avid archers who are interested in more than just slinging arrows but in archery as an art i recommend checking this out.

Archery fascinates me. I used to enjoy it as a youth and I've been thinking about it again of late, I'm not sure why, and then I stumbled upon this tribe.

I'd like to give it a try again but am not sure how or where to start. I'm in Essex County, NJ but spend a lot of time in Bergen County too.

Thanks!

Why do you shoot?

I'm curious. I shoot for two reasons. Make that three.
First, I enjoy it and I use archery as a form of meditation.
Ever read the Zen of archery?
Second, I would like to be able to hunt animals for food one day.
Third is a bit of a long answer but for now I'll say "just incase"

I bring frightful news, for another tribe of reenactors plans to lay bloody siege upon our peaceful tribe. They've already plundered the peaceful tribe of gunsmiths, and have acquired the knowledge of gunpowder. Presently, they seek really round stones to load into crudely cast cannons. Steel yourselves, archers, for our day of glory is nigh!
Hup,hup...

My neice learned archery at camp and wants to get into the sport. We want to get her a good recurve bow for her birthday. Problem is, we are not sure what size and # to get her. Our budget is about $100.00

She is 12 years old, 100 lbs, about 4'9," I think, definitely under 5'. She is small for her age but fairly athletic.

She has a 22" draw.

I've been looking at the Buckeye Jr., which is a 54" recurve and comes in 20# or 25#.

Should I get her a junior type bow like this or do you think she could handle an adult bow?

Thanks for any advice.

I was gifted a lovely recurve bow for my birthday, linen backed oak with a flemish string (I think). I live in New Jersey, can you suggest any places in the Northern part of the state to practice? I would be so grateful because my backyard isn't really a safe place for a new person to shoot. Too many folks about. Thank you so much!

Question...

I used to shoot archery in high school (many years ago) and loved it. The equipment was provided by the school, so I never really had to learn anything about it. Now I would like to get back into it, and also get my 13 year old son into it. I am looking for traditional wooden bows, but cannot find any in the shops in my area. I have done some research and can find plenty of websites from which I can order one, but I have questions. Aesthetically, I prefer the recurves, but I also see a lot of longbows. Is there a better type for beginners? Do you need to be tall to shoot a longbow? And when they say "a 70 inch longbow", is that strung or unstrung? Also, how do you determine what your draw length should be? I would imagine one would have to experiment to find the proper draw weight for oneself, correct?

Any help you can give will be appreciated, since I am very serious about this and I want to get it right so we don't get discouraged from trying to use equipment that is inappropriate for us.

Have you ever had to deal with arrows more crooked than your local used car salesman? I was at a ren faire over in hollister, CA the other day and plopped down a couple bucks for about 10 pulls on one of their longbows. Luckily, they had some lefty ones. Of course, most arrows didn't even have complete fletching. I could barely hit a target 30 feet away because my arrows would spin around and hit the target sideways. Anyone know how to deal with such cruddy arrows? I got all spoiled shooting hand made aluminum arrows for so long that I can't handle the standard crap they give you elsewhere...

Greetings to all here;

It has been a while since my last visit, and I apologize to those who may be thinking that I have been ignoring them. Life has been a bit busy for me lately.

I have been asked a few times where it is that I live, so I figured I would answer the question (finally).

I live in the warm, sub-Arctic state of Minnesota, -- approx 45 degrees Fahrenheit, last time I looked at 10:00 PM (right now I can't decide which is warmer, outside or the inside of my house - the furnace is not working right) -- in a small, blink-and-miss-it town about a 45 minute drive North of Minneapolis/St. Paul.
I think I will go out and haul some more trees up to the house for firewood tommorrow, it's getting cold in here. :-P

So What do you shoot? Me personally you ask! I class archery in a broad way so here goes. I use a natural wood longbow, mongol style recurve, 14th c. crossbow, shitty ass chinese made hand crossbow, a 6 ft. jivaro blowgun, a variety of regular and custom made shuriken and a set of 21 gram pub darts. How about you?
Dirk

Hello all,
I'm just starting archery and with what small expierience I've gained shooting in the back yard, I'm hooked.
I'm in Washington DC and though there is a fantastic public range only 10 mins. from my house, there seem to be no archers in this city!!!

I've been reading about setting up a compound bow and the ammount of variables involved are staggering. Where do I start?
I have a Genisis Pro. bow with a Cavalier stinger rest, no sight. The draw weight is right in the middle of it's range at about 25lbs. This is comfortable for me and has stopped me putting arrows through the target at short range and into the garage door. 30" fiberglass arrows that are not shattering like the first dozen ceder arrows I started with. I can shoot a nice tight group at about 20 meters, too tight sometimes as I have a pile of nocks and splinters in a box.

I think my rest should be ajusted and I am currently trying different positions and angles.

Any pointers would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance

Hey,
So I was into archery as a teenager and still have two of my old bows. I am interested in getting back into it, but have pretty much forgotten everything about it. I have tried to find some archery classes in my area but have been unsuccessfull. Are there any tutorial books that any of you would recommend? I know that for the actual shooting part, books are not that usefull, but I am mainly wanting to relearn the technical side of things, such as selecting and maintaining equipment, that sort of thing.

About a year ago I bought a thumring for the asian style of shooting, because I'm the only one in our archeryclub that uses a thumbring I had to teach myself how to shoot with it, that's pretty tricky when you're used to using your fingers for drawing the bow.
Now I'm wondering if any of you use a thumbring and how you like it.

Is there a such thing as an archery school? I haven't touched a bow in at least 15 years that didn't include suction cup arrows, and have been thinking of it again for some reason. I have no deisre to hunt anything (except perhaps girls, but that involves phone numbers and not arrows!), but I want to learn all I can about it.

If it makes some sort of difference, I'm in Chicago.

Hello, I have been involved with Archery since the age of 3. I have shot every type of bow readily available. I love Archery. I will respect the request about not discussing hunting with bow and arrows, but may I ask why this is being asked of the members? Thanks you I look forward to discussing traditional and primative archery as well as roving and 3D shoots. God Bless and Good Shooting, Curtiss

So I haven't done any serious target shooting since I was in the Boy Scout....age 15ish...and I recently acquired an old compound that I purchase some 15 years ago....I would like to pursue the sport again....I remember having lots of fun...killing hay in the Arroyo Seco basis in Pasadena. My bow needs to be properly tensioned and looked over....can anybody refer me to a good shop in the SF Area??? preferably the city. I was never formally trained and would like to "relearn" archery....I remember it being very meditative and satisfying.

Hi all,

I don't know about you but I'm a fieldarchery fan, a friend of mine has build europe's leading fieldarchery website www.fieldarcher.nl this site is probably also going to be the official website of the worldchampionships field archery 2004 in Croatia.
The fieldarcher site already was the official website for the european championships fieldarchery 2003 in France.
pictures of many fieldarchery contests in Europe are placed on this site.

Enjoy!!!
