Re: NEw to Archery
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 10:25 AMI started out with a simple bow that I found at a garage sale, and it was pretty cool. I now have a 50-65# Martin compound that I like, got it off of eBay. However, it wouldn't be good for period stuff, if you want to do that.
My suggestion would be to find a local archery club and borrow a few, see what you like. -

Re: NEw to Archery
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 2:36 PMThanks Eric,
Unfortunately there are not archery clubs close by me, but i have been looking around at some Bows and will make a descission here soon. got a week off comeing up and am going to be camping in the idea place to practice with it. Il let you know what i find.. Im thinking less expensive right now, but upgrading quickly as i get the feel for it.
YOur 50-65# Martin sounds really nice.ill have to check this one out. Though i dont do much period stuff at the time being.
Do you belong to some clubs where you are? utilize the back yard? I live in a condo so working with a bow in the back yard would be against rules of the association, but there are plenty of great field close by...
thanks again for your advice, i appreciate it.

Re: NEw to Archery
Wed, July 5, 2006 - 2:09 PMI used to use the backyard, until I got married and the wife said no way. :) There are a few ranges near me, and I did a little in the SCA.
The Martin was from 1979. I bought it because it was cheap and because it's not painted like camouflage, it's made of wood. Still in very nice shape. It's longer than most cases available today (48") so I had a tough time finding one. I chose one that lets the bow stick out about 2 inches.
Most gun ranges (in my area anyway) have archery ranges inside as well. Some high schools still have archery classes, so you might be able to borrow their gym too. -

Wed, July 5, 2006 - 7:40 PMHi Eric,
i have been looking around at some bows, and i am too finding that a big chunk of the lot are colored in camoflage, which i do not want. The more natural wood is more appealing to me and certainly more natural.. I never thought about a gun range, which there is one a couple towns over, i should check out.. sounds like your quite proficient at it.. bulls eye everytime...;-)

Re: NEw to Archery
Thu, July 6, 2006 - 10:12 AMHahaha. I'm lucky if I can even get to the range more than once a year lately. Having two kids with one on the way tends to drain your time.
The indoor ranges are usually pretty short (the one I went to was 10 yards) but are more than enough to learn with.
I wouldn't mind getting camouflage, I'd just have to get spraypaint immediately. :-D Usually they're not made out of wood, so they'll last longer.

Re: NEw to Archery
Wed, July 5, 2006 - 7:21 PMI found it really helpful to have instruction. I avoided a lot of injury by learning how to hold the bow (longbow) straight (properly), borrowed protective arm covers (they have a name, but I'm blanking on them), and learned how to focus. I was not learning for hunting, but strictly for target practice. I found free archery ranges with free instruction by Olympic-level instructors, bows and protective items for borrowing, and a place to safely shoot my arrows. I can't remember how I found out about it initially, however, try this website:
www.socalarchery.com/Clubs.htm
Good luck. -

Re: NEw to Archery
Thu, July 6, 2006 - 10:13 AMMake sure you clear it with local law enforcement. I spoke to the chief of police for my city, and he said as long as the police come by and inspect the backstop there would be no issues. -

Mon, July 17, 2006 - 3:27 PMHI there,
Do you know how hard it is to find a Bow that is not in the colors of camoflauge?.... just about everything i saw today was just that ,....Im thinking it would be nice to have something a bit more natural. Even the arrows are bright in color... -

Re: NEw to Archery
Mon, July 17, 2006 - 9:43 PMI understand. You may have to go online to find one you like. Here's just a few:
www.blackwidowbows.com/
www.cabelas.com/ (has a small selection of non-camo bows)
www.3riversarchery.com/
The alternative is to just take a camo bow and spray paint it. -

Re: NEw to Archery
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 6:08 AMYou're welcome. Here's a few more:
www.thewoodenbow.com/
www.bowmaker.net/
huntingsociety.org/custombows.html
I have not had a chance to do any shooting lately. Probably not until after the baby is born. :)
Black Widow prices, the last time I checked many years ago, were over $200 each. I'm sure it's gone up. You might have to ask them for a price. -

Re: NEw to Archery
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 11:46 AMI've got an 11 year old, she has two bows...One could be used with our 18 month old as it has a rubbery string, maybe 5 lbs pull max. Won't let him use it until he's much older though.
