So whadda ya shoot?

So What do you shoot? Me personally you ask! I class archery in a broad way so here goes. I use a natural wood longbow, mongol style recurve, 14th c. crossbow, shitty ass chinese made hand crossbow, a 6 ft. jivaro blowgun, a variety of regular and custom made shuriken and a set of 21 gram pub darts. How about you?

I shoot recurve as well, but I have a Hoyt. I also use a sight and stabilizer, so my full class is Adult Female Olympic Freestyle Limited.

White 30# take-down recurve. (Pretty sure it's a Hoyt. I haven't looked lately...) Sometimes I use the level sight and stabilizer, sometimes I don't. I was on the Intercollegiate Archery Team when I was in Jr. College. (Many years ago.)

Unfortunately, it's a bit too fancy for the Ren. Faire range. :P Right Dirk? :D

Is that your bow in the main page picture? If it is we may have got ours from the same maker.

i shoot a recurve, but it's from some bow hunting company, you don't exactly get much choice of bows when you live in florida and are left handed... i think it's an impala or something

Hey there. Your profile says you are in Berkeley. Have you tried shopping for a bow around there? I know there used to be a huge sporting goods store with an archery range in it, somewhere in the Oakland or Berkeley area. Sorry I can't tell you what the name was. It's been a loooonnngg time since I was there, and I was only there once. Check the phone book. :D

actually, i got my bow from some hunting supply store in florida, where i used to live. those damn sharp arrows would always get stuck in trees though... right now i just wish there were a range that was closer than san pablo or the chabot space and science center, so that i could practice a little bit. i haven't really done any archery since i moved here unfortunately :(

You might try asking at The Bow Rack (the San Pablo indoor range) if they know of a range closer to Berkeley. Norm's a real nice guy, and he'll help you out if he can. (I worked at the shop in it's previous location, and earned my equipment there.)
Did you try the phone book?
I hear they have places to shoot out at Briones Park. Well, they used to, anyway. (I've never made it out there... Just never got around to it.)

                Heyla, Christophe;

I understand you live somewhere in Berkely, California. There is a group known as the Society for Creative Anachronisms, Inc. (SCA) that inludes in its membership numerous archers. Perhaps some of the people in the local chapter could be of some help to you. The website for the local (Northern Alameda County) chapter is provinceofthemists.org/ Scroll down 'til you find the web link for the "Chatelaine" in the list of "Officers". Our "style" of archery is limited to strictly traditional, though, so "wheel-bows" are not allowed.

Not that I've been all that active lately, but I don't think we have a great many active archers in the Mists. (Yes, I am an SCA person.)

A., I am curious where you are located? You don't say in your profile.

I am currently - though not right now ;-) - shooting a Martin Longbow, 50 lbs at 28"; 29"Cedar arrows with natural feather fletching, 5 inch length 4-fletch pattern.

BTW Dirk, your signature line looks a lot like one of the phrases some of the combat archers in the SCA use a lot: "So, you're a fighter? Well, go ahead and run, you'll just die tired!"

to respond to the archery quip from a fighter's perspective...

"well, yes, i'm a fighter, let's see how well you face off when i'm within 3 feet of you and i toss aside my shield full of arrows?"

I shoot a lefty, PSE, takedown, recurve, au natural. I just started target shooting. Mostly, my archery is functional by means of hunting. So I shoot only #55 @28 and use carbon arrows as opposed to wood or aluminum.
Wanting to shoot competitively though, I will soon be outfitting my bow with sights and a clicker.
