Re: sca???
Tue, November 9, 2004 - 6:41 PMthe SCA is the society for creative anacronism. It's a global community that was started at UC berkeley in the 60s. they re-enact some of the brighter and more fun sides of midevil culture. they do have archery, but leave that composite bow at home. There are various opinions on how silly or serious the SCA actually is, but they're a generally good bunch. Go talk to your local chapter if you're interested in it.
They also do fighting, garb, brewing, music, dance, and anything else you can come up with that you'd like to do. -

Tue, November 16, 2004 - 5:12 AMUm, Christophe. I'm sure you mean 'Medieval'.
I just invited Jef to the SCA tribe, and sent him the url for the official website, as well.
(Yes, I'm a member. Well, was a member. I can't afford to pay to keep up membership right now...)
And yes, they do have rules to keep you safe. (Insurance issues are always a huge pain to deal with in those sort of situations.) If you are participating in an event, you will have to meet certain requirements. Safety included. -

Re: sca???
Sun, January 16, 2005 - 7:40 PMUm, I think you meant to say "compound" (it has those little "training" wheels on the ends), not "composite" (laminate, made of more than one type of material)...Composite bows were in use in Persia and Mongolia (as just two of many examples) in the Mid/Late Mediaeval Period. If all an archer has is an old fiberglass bow, fine - but we reallt do encourage all archers to aquire/borrow a more "traditional" type of bow. my bow is a Martin(tm) laminate longbow, and I know a few who use modern take-down recurves as well. I have seen only one take-down longbow, so I know that they are out there.
