Hello All,
I was gifted a lovely recurve bow for my birthday, linen backed oak with a flemish string (I think). I live in New Jersey, can you suggest any places in the Northern part of the state to practice? I would be so grateful because my backyard isn't really a safe place for a new person to shoot. Too many folks about. Thank you so much!

Re: New Archer wonders where to go?!
Mon, April 18, 2005 - 1:52 PMWell, if you were in the SCA, you'd probably know the exact right people. My roommate, LJ, will probably chime in here coz she was the archery marshal for that group before I lured her to the West Coast.
Bottom line is: there's a weekly practice up in the wilds of Milford, NJ, at the old KOA campground. Contact for that and those people (and you don't have to be a member to play with them, and they do teach) is at: rustedwoodlands.eastkingdom.org/. If you go to the bottom of that page, there's a selection for Directions, which has some contact info. And there's lots of other stuff to do with the group, including various types of dance. (Don't know if they've got an ME group.)
Best of luck,

The Rusted Woodlands site gets it done. Look for contact info for Ragnar under the Officers page and he can give you all the info you need about local SCA practices.
If you're looking for a commercial range, I regret to say that I don't see Butts & Bows listed for Belleville any more. The range looked like a cave, but owner Len Cardinale was a sweetheart of a guy, a terrific teacher, and welcomed any archer of any level. I suspect he's retired by now.
Targeteers on Route 46 in Saddlebrook is still there and while they cater primarily to the wheelie bow crowd, it's a clean, well lit place to go shoot. Targeteers Sporting Goods, 101 US Highway 46, Saddle Brook, NJ 07663 (201) 843-7788. It was $5/hour a couple of years ago, might be a little more these days.
Good luck,
